Why ICAN?
The ICAN Application (Intelligent Climate Alert Network for Outdoor Workers) is a health alert tool designed specifically for outdoor workers. It provides real-time weather information along with health protection advice.
Using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, ICAN is a user-friendly application that provides real-time health information, alerts, and resources to vulnerable outdoor workers. ICAN will use GIS data to map areas of high health risk and provide tailored recommendations to mitigate these risks.
The ICAN application is specifically developed for outdoor workers, but it is accessible to all citizens for free.
Why use GIS (Geographic Information System)?
Geographic Information System (GIS) is a comprehensive organization of four components: computer hardware, software, geographic data, and human operators, designed to effectively receive, store, manage, analyze, and display all forms of geographic data (Environmental Systems Research Institute - ESRI, 1994).
Features
Provides information about hazards: temperature, humidity, UV radiation, and other risks
Enables users to identify hazards through heat index, worker comfort index (or Universal thermal climate index – UTCI) in specific working environments
Combines exposure status and vulnerability assessments to generate personalized recommendations for different users
Facilitates support, contribution, and information sharing within the user community. Users can create a collaborative community to identify risks and develop simultaneous solutions
Benefits
Enhances understanding of workplace spatial conditions and occupational health conditions
Delivers real-time risk information and personalized notifications
Provides information about GIS-based hazards for proactive and timely risk response
Enables information contribution and support for community members
Facilitates connections with experts across various fields, particularly in health-related domains
Aims and Objectives
- Protect workers' health: Provide early warnings about weather-related health risks such as high temperatures, high humidity, UV radiation, or other environmental factors that could be harmful. This system helps workers make timely decisions to avoid health impacts.
- Increase awareness: Enhance workers' awareness of potential health hazards while working outdoors. The system will provide information and recommendations on necessary protective measures, such as taking breaks, staying hydrated, and using protective gear.
- Optimize work productivity: By forecasting and issuing early warnings about adverse weather conditions, the system helps workers and managers plan tasks more efficiently, optimizing working time and avoiding unnecessary disruptions.
- Health monitoring and reporting: Offer features for personal health monitoring and reporting related data, enabling managers and workers to track health over time and identify potential health risks.
